Blocked drains occur when an accumulation of debris is stored within the plumbing system. A distinction between indoor blockages and outdoor blockages usually occurs when materials are flushed down. Indoor blockages usually occur when heavy materials are flushed down the drain.

In order to avoid more serious leaks, overflows and structural damage to the drains, here are 3 quick solutions to fix a blocked drain:

  1. Mix acidic vinegar and water:

Bathroom drains are usually blocked with foreign objects such as hair, face wipes and sanitary towels. An easy solution to unblocking the drain includes mixing a 1/3rd of vinegar in a measuring cup to break down the components of the blockage.

  1. Use caustic soda:

Sodium Hydroxide is an incredibly strong chemical which can cause harmful burns and damage to the skin. Mix the caustic soda with cold water and pour it down the drain. Leave the solution in the drain for 30 minutes and flush the drain with boiling water.

  1. Pour dish detergent in a clogged toilet:

Dish detergent acts as a lubricant to breakdown chemical components and greasy debris residue. Pour boiling water down the toilet and flush. As the final step, use a plunger to disintegrate the final components of the blockage.
